  1. My wife & I bought this laptop from Amazon on November 4 to replace a 10 year old Thinkpad & supplement another 2 year old SONY laptop we own. We are very pleased with the new laptop. It is attractive, easily portable despite its screen size, & appears to have been manufactured with high quality parts & standards, We use it primarily for internet search & email, & are pleased with its speed & ease of use. We have not found Windows 7 to be the great leap forward that most seem to believe, but that is probably because we don’t use many of its features……..We have rated the new laptop only 3 stars because we believe that many who buy a SONY [at a premium price] expect more in the way of after-the-sale service than they would from most other brands. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. Recently, our 2 year old SONY laptop suddenly developed wide white lines on its screen which made it unuseable. Although the warranty had expired, we thought it was reasonable to ask SONY if it would help with repairs, particularly after learning that other owners had experienced similar problems. After a series of exasperating & unproductive emails with SONY service, I finally wrote to SONY’s CEO. The employee who responded agreed to pay a portion of our $365 repair cost for a replacement screen installed by a local computer shop. That was more than a month ago. We have never received the payment, and our repeated followup inquiries by email, fax & phone have gone unanswered…….We decided to buy the new SONY laptop only after SONY agreed to share our repair costs on the old laptop. Needless to say, had we known that SONY would not follow through on its word, we would not have done so.

I bought a Sony VAIO VGN-FW280J/H 16.4-Inch Laptop (2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 7200 RPM 320 GB Hard Drive, BD-RW, Vista Premium) Gray, in May 2009 for the good price of USD 999.99. I didn’t open the box for about one month, because I have 2 other Laptops an Apple and a HP.

Then I used this Sony for about 2 months as a desktop, but not that much, so I didn’t move or bring this Sony on th go. Then for somehow it builds moisture inside the LCD, I believe due to the hot weather, I contacted Sony Support, they asked me to send the unit to Sony Repair in San Diego which I did and they received the unit on 10.05.2009. Yesterday on 10.20.2009 at 8 pm I got an email saying that the repair estimate is USD 699.99 plus tax, whaaaaaat?…I called right away asked them to send it back, this is crazy…

I just can not believe that this is a SONY, one of the biggest company in electronics/multimedia/movie industry.

I will never ever buy a sony anymore…

  3. I have three Dells, one MacBook and one Acer. I would say among them I liked Sony because of below

    Pros:

Good specs for a mid-grade notebook

    Comforable & quiet keyboard

    HDMI output

    Aesthetically pleasing

    Upward facing speakers

    nice finger tip mouse pad

    crisp resolution

    Cons:

USB on right side I was using wired mouse and because of the USB connection and mouse it was very uncomfortable until I got the wireless mouse with tiny SB connection.

Fan comes on intermittently every 4-5 mins its noisy and gets pretty hot on the left side of the laptop.

    Heavy (6.9 pounds)

Low battery life (~2.5hrs on light usage)

Modem connection: who uses it now? could have used that space for something else like extra USB or firewire or for external SATA.

I bought this a month ago as a replacement for my 5 year old Dell B120.

I used to hate Sony products but they have been impressing me lately with a recent spate of excellent products (namely, the Playstation 3 and a Sony dual-analog alarm clock).

This VAIO is no exception. Thankfully, Sony didnt add a ton of crapware to remove like Dell did with my last laptop. The screen is really nice and the keyboard is awesome (yes, the keyboard). Theres plenty of storage and memory to handle multiple tasks and as someone who completely skipped the Vista generation, i am really liking Windows 7

2 minor complaints. I hate the frontal location of the headphone jack and the wireless switch, which jives with my laptop stand

I bought this product on Oct 24th,2009.

First of all I was glad it wasn’t packed with much adware or promotional software as I feared.

I’ve got a 3 month MS Office trial period which was quite generous.

The speakers are pretty good for a laptop computer but if you want more you can hook up a set of speakers. For my choice I would prefer the plugging at the back or at one side instead of the front.

The LCD screen is great. The style and design is quite neat. I pulled it out of the case at LAX airport and some japanese fellows were quite amazed by the looks of my brand new computer.

The only setback, which does not bother me, is the absence of a blu ray player. If you can spare this feature you save over $250 over the very same model with blu ray included.

You can’t go wrong with Sony I guess. One friend put it in these terms: a Sony VAIO is like a BMW or Mercedes Benz in the laptop world.
